Meet the Bloggers: Allie Beatty

We thought it might be nice if you knew more about the phenomenally talented bloggers who blog quality health-related content here at the Life Sciences blogs.

All of our bloggers are passionate about the health topics they write about related to cancer, diabetes and cardio heart health; compassionate in intent; and dedicated to bringing news, information, resources and a personal perspective meant to educate, enlighten and inspire in prevention, health management and survivorship.

Without further ado, we would like to introduce you to Allison "Allie" Love Beatty, who blogs the Diabetes Blog.

When did you become a Life Sciences blogger? September 2006

Formerly I worked as a financial analyst, fully licensed with my series 7 and all the other whistles and bells required to keep your head above water in the financial services industry. I felt it apropos to start my fall with a new career, altogether. I'm new to blogging but I am no stranger to sharing my opinion.

How did you become interested in writing about health?

In July, I issued a press release about my website Shop2Cures. I was thrilled when I saw that the Cancer Blog gave recognition to my website. I thanked Dalene for posting about my site, and in response to my "blog thanks" she asked if I'd consider becoming a blogger. Thrilled at the invite -- I jumped on the offer, immediately!

When it comes to health, what is your best advice to maintaining good health?

My best advice to maintaining good health is to not let stress consume you. Stress will literally break you down and tear you up, inside. As best you can -- deter and detox your life from any undue stress. There is far too much in life that will stress you out. Some things are literally unavoidable (especially health related) so when it comes to stress-find a way to keep your life as low as possible on the stress scales.

Name three favorite quotes:

Love knows not it's own depth until the hour of separation.

If You Are Not Part Of The Solution You Are Part Of The Problem.

Sun's out, guns out.

Name three health-related books you would recommend:

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars. It's a compulsive book on cutting out the carbohydrates and any foods that have a semblance of sugar in them. My former endocrinologist refers to Dr. Bernstein as a compulsive lunatic! She might be right, but his principles are laced with good intentions.

Another book I've gained greater perspective in life from is Creative Visualization, written by Shakti Gawain. The principles outlined in her book unveil the natural path to happiness. One must first discover who you are by doing what you do best, to ultimately have what you want. She points out that the mainstream way of thinking is backwards. The common misconception is that you must first have money, in order to do what you want to do, to be happy. Her philosophy is simple and remarkable.

The last book I would recommend is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Hands down, this is one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read! It is a timeless classic that is about a hopeless boy whose dreams come true. Anybody who reads the story will fall in love with the descriptive language of Roald Dalh, the Oompa Loompahs, and of course, the fantasy experience of the 5 "golden ticket" winners.

Who inspires you?

I've been inspired by many people throughout my life. The one woman I wish to mention predominantly is Dr. Denise Faustman. I believe her scientific research holds the answer to a cure for type I diabetes. Only after she begins clinical trials on humans will we know how effective her proposed cure will be for type I diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. I am inspired, every day, finally knowing that a cure is on its way.

What inspires you?

I am inspired when I am able to do something so well that others admire my work. I will continue to blaze a trail on innovative and persuasive information for diabetics. Sharing this information provides me a great source of inspiration and motivation to "keep on keepin' on."

When you are not writing for the Life Science blogs, what do you do?

In my spare time I like seeing my sisters, meeting new people, exploring new adventures in life and figuring out where I'm headed -- and with whom. I suppose to summarize, in my spare time I'm trying to manufacture a social life to speak of. I've been a bit of a hermit these past few years trying to build my corporation to gain notoriety for the sake of funding cure research. Here's where I lose most of my audience (friends and family, included). When I start talking business-people's eyes glaze over. My success is based on a dollar amount of contributions to cure research. My life has dissolved into a never-ending journey of building a business based on the immeasurable success of online shopping.

Quite simply: I created an advertising portal for the largest shopping sites. The site earns advertising commissions when visitors click through and shop my affiliates, Shop4Cures. By offering coupons, free shipping, and other incentives I hope to encourage people to use Shop4Cures for their online shopping. The greatest benefit of using Shop4Cures is the donation that is made to cure research every time you shop.

With that said, I hope to focus my blogging efforts mostly on introducing great concepts for diabetes-related inventions and concepts to the diabetes community online. I hope to keep it entertaining, as well as wonderfully informative. As previously mentioned, in defense of my atrophying social life -- hopefully I can rebound in the public eye and pick-up a few online stalkers in the process. I don't mind the attention, in fact -- I welcome it!
